AchilloTape™ System

For Chronic Achilles Tendon Reconstruction

The AchilloTape System provides a non-harvesting, quick, simple and effective technique for the reconstruction of a chronic ruptured Achilles tendon. The procedure pack comprises a wide, open weave polyester implant and associated disposable drill and rigid probe, all provided in a single box. The implant is available in two sizes: 10 mm x 800 mm (small) and 20 mm x 800 mm (large). The implant is placed through a small bone tunnel in the os calcis and threaded within the tendon stumps to minimize exposure of the implant while providing a strong repair.

Indications

The AchilloTape is a single use Poly-Tape device intended for Achilles tendon repair.

This reconstruction procedure is particularly suited to the following situations:

  • In chronic cases where diagnosis of the Achilles tendon rupture has been delayed and atrophy of the tendon has occurred
  • Where previous surgery or conservative treatment for Achilles tendon rupture has failed
  • For the elderly or patients with a history of prolonged steroid treatment, where wound healing is often a problem after ankle surgery

The AchilloTape System is available in two sizes: small and large.

Small AchilloTape Procedure Pack (10 mm x 800 mm), includes:

Poly-Tape, 10 mm x 800 mm (supplied sterile)

Packaged with the following disposables:

Rigid Probe with eye, stainless steel, 20 cm (supplied sterile)

  • 1Proximal fixation is provided by threading the AchilloTape with a Bunnell-type stitch in the proximal tendon stump
  • 2The AchilloTape is tied at the site of rupture with a reef knot, with or without an extra throw
  • 3A 6-9 cm incision is made posteromedial to the site of rupture
  • 4Distal fixation is provided by threading the AchilloTape through a small diameter bone tunnel in the os calcis, followed by a single pass in the distal tendon stump
  • Proximal fixation is provided by threading the AchilloTape with a Bunnell-type stitch in the proximal tendon stump1

Features and benefits

  • No requirement to harvest an autograft, resulting in a quick and simple technique with no donor site morbidity
  • Relatively small incision of 6-9 cm, when compared to traditional methods (e.g. gastrocnemius fascial flap)
  • Approximates the tendon even when a large preoperative gap exists (over 6 cm), which may not be possible to close
  • The implant has an open weave structure that encourages tissue ingrowth
  • None of the risks or availability problems associated with allografts
  • Minimal postoperative immobilization allows for early rehabilitation; partial weight bearing after two weeks, full weight bearing after six weeks
